3 Ways to Wear Fall’s Turtleneck Trend
Tuesday, October 18, 2016Fall is officially here, which means it’s time to get your wardrobe ready for the cooler, crisper days that are (hopefully!) in our very near future. While the season has a whole slew of staples that make a reappearance year after year, one style that is back—and bigger than ever—is the turtleneck.
As Edited writes, the lead layering piece of Fall 2016 was seen on the runways via simple long sleeve tops, forming the neckline of knit dresses, and making a dramatically oversized splash on sweaters. No matter how you wear it, one thing is for sure: when it comes to the fall season, one can’t have too many turtlenecks. For inspiration on how to style this must-have trend, check out three ways to wear it below.
With a Slip Dress
Slinky, sexy, and oh-so skin-baring, the slip dress is, without a doubt, one of the year’s most popular trends. And it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Worn solo, the slip dress is the perfect antidote to summer’s heat, but come fall’s chillier temps, the strappy number will definitely require a bit more coverage. Enter the turtleneck. Ideal for layering, the turtleneck provides extra warmth to the slip dress, creating a fall-ready ensemble in seconds. Wear a thin style underneath your favorite slip to show off the silhouette of the dress, or throw an oversized turtleneck sweater on over your slip dress to create a totally different (but equally stylish) look. If the slip dress in question features a mini hem, finish with thigh-high boots for additional coverage. For midi lengths, pair with ankle booties, a luxe loafer, chunky heels—the sky’s the limit.

With Jeans and Boots
Versatile, comfortable, and easy-to-wear, jeans and boots are a classic combination that has become a staple of the fall and winter seasons. But instead of reaching for your favorite sweater or long sleeved tee to pair with your denim and boots, consider an equally comfortable yet trendier alternative: the tight turtleneck. Fitted in all the right places, this particular turtleneck style reads a little bit sexy, a tad retro, and incredibly chic. Choose one in a basic black hue and tuck into a pair of high-waisted jeans for look that exudes off-duty model glamour. To mirror the sleek lines of the turtleneck, Lyst recommends working a streamlined silhouette in skinny jeans or opting for a classic straight-leg style. Both are perfect for tucking into a pair of riding boots or cuffing at the ankle to wear with booties. Throw on some sparkly accessories to elevate the look for a night out or top with a blazer for the perfect casual Friday ensemble to wear to the office. You can’t go wrong no matter how (or where) you choose to rock this particular combination.

With Denim Overalls
Much like your go-to pair of jeans, denim overalls are a one-and-done, pair-with-anything kind of item. Despite their inherent versatility, however, denim overalls are typically seen as more intimidating than your regular old garden-variety jeans, and therefore, deemed less wearable. Before you give up on this particular pairing, remember that it’s all about proportions—The Huffington Post suggests opting for a pair with adjustable straps for the best fit, finding the perfect length (or cuffing the legs if they’re too long), and pairing with a heel (whether pump or boot) to lengthen legs. Then, add in your turtleneck. A chunky knit style with interesting design details, such as an oversized cowl neck, shoulder cut-outs, or unexpected texture, will go a long way toward not only creating contrast with your denim overalls, but elevating your look in general.
